This distinction matters more than any specification chart suggests, and it is central to three of the four OTE Oman models — the Forester, WRX, and Crosstrek.

Full-time AWD (Subaru Symmetrical)

Torque splits continuously to all four wheels. There is no waiting for a wheel to slip, no system intervention required, no mode to engage. Power is delivered through all four tyres from the moment the car moves, and continues until it stops.

Reactive AWD (typical segment alternative)

The car is primarily front-wheel drive. When the front wheels detect slip — a fraction of a second after traction is lost — torque transfers to the rear axle. By the time that transfer completes, the vehicle has already moved in an unintended direction.

In normal urban driving, this difference is rarely felt. On Oman's mountain switchbacks in light rain, on a gravel wadi approach, or when pulling into traffic on a surface that changes unexpectedly — the difference between a car that was already managing all four wheels and one that just started doing so is immediate and physical.

The Symmetrical designation describes something specific about the drivetrain geometry, not just the AWD function. The engine, gearbox, and front and rear differentials all sit on the same centre line — perfectly mirrored from left to right.

This layout is only possible because of Subaru's Boxer engine. A flat, horizontally-opposed engine is compact enough to sit within the drivetrain's centreline. A conventional upright inline-four or V6 cannot be positioned this way — it sits beside or above the gearbox, creating an asymmetric drivetrain that distributes mass unevenly left-to-right.

The result of true symmetry is even weight distribution between the left and right sides of the car.

This affects cornering stability, braking behaviour, and how the car responds to sudden steering inputs. In the Crosstrek (156PS, 1,995cc), the Forester (185PS, 2,498cc), and the WRX (turbocharged 2,498cc), the physics of the platform are the same.

Where the AWD Difference Is Felt on Oman Roads

Oman's road network tests AWD systems in ways that European or North American roads do not. The Jebel Akhdar approach from Al Hamra involves tight switchbacks at altitude on a surface that shifts from sealed tarmac to loose gravel with no warning. The wadi crossings across the Hajar Mountains present river stones, sand, and packed earth in sequence. The Muscat Expressway during a storm delivers standing water and unpredictable surface grip at 120km/h.

X-MODE — When Symmetrical AWD Needs Additional Intelligence

On the steepest descents and most technically demanding terrain, Symmetrical AWD benefits from a coordination layer. X-MODE simultaneously manages engine output, ABS, and AWD torque split to optimise traction on loose surfaces at low speed. Hill Descent Control, which operates within X-MODE, holds a constant descent speed without driver braking.

X-MODE is available on two OTE Oman models: the Forester 2.5i-Sport EyeSight and the Crosstrek 2.0i-S EyeSight. The WRX does not carry X-MODE — its AWD is tuned for performance road driving, not technical off-road terrain. The BRZ is rear-wheel drive by design and has a different purpose entirely.
