Why the Subaru Forester Drives Differently — The Engineering Behind Oman's Most Capable SUV
The Subaru Forester is the most popular Subaru in Oman. Three trims are available at OTE Group Muscat — all built on the same core specification: a 185PS 2.5-litre Boxer engine, Symmetrical AWD, 220mm ground clearance, and EyeSight, standard across every trim from the first level.

This article explains the three engineering decisions that make the Forester drive differently to every other SUV in its segment. Not better in every way — differently, in ways that matter for how Oman drivers actually use their cars.
Decision 1 — AWD That Is Always Active
The Forester's Symmetrical AWD is not a part-time system. It is active from the moment you pull away, and it remains active at every speed on every surface. Power is distributed continuously to all four wheels — not reactively in response to a slip event, but proactively as part of how the car moves.
For Oman's road conditions, this distinction is significant. On the approach road to Jebel Akhdar, on a wadi gravel surface, or on the wet tarmac of the Muscat Expressway in rain — the Forester is already driving all four wheels before any of those surfaces demand it. There is no moment of adjustment, no reactive catch. The car is simply ready.
This applies to all three Forester trims in Oman. Symmetrical AWD is not a feature reserved for the top specification. It is the foundation on which every Forester is built.
Decision 2 — The 2.5-Litre Boxer Engine
The Forester's 2.5-litre Boxer produces 185PS and 247Nm of torque. Those numbers are not exceptional by segment standards. What is exceptional is where the engine sits.
A horizontally-opposed Boxer engine's pistons move toward each other in the same plane, which allows the entire engine assembly to sit below the front axle centreline. This is not possible with a conventional inline-four or V6, both of which sit upright and above the wheel hubs.
The result is a centre of gravity significantly lower than any comparative SUV in the Forester's class. Lower mass means the car leans less in corners, recovers more quickly from lateral input, and behaves with a solidity that rivals with identical power outputs simply cannot match.
The 185PS figure does not tell this story. The Boxer layout does.
Decision 3 — EyeSight Standard Across All Three Trims
EyeSight is Subaru's driver assistance technology — and in the Oman Forester lineup, it is standard on the 2.5i, the 2.5i-L, and the 2.5i-Sport. There is no trim decision required for safety.
The system uses stereo cameras and, on the latest Forester specification, a wide-angle monocular camera that significantly expands pedestrian and bicycle detection range. This is particularly relevant in Oman's urban environment, where cyclists and pedestrians appear at intersections without warning.
EyeSight includes Pre-Collision Braking (which applies full autonomous braking if the driver does not respond to an alert), Lane Keeping Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering, and Blind-Spot Detection with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert. From the entry 2.5i EyeSight trim — none of this requires an upgrade.
220mm Ground Clearance — And What It Means on Oman Roads
220mm of ground clearance is the Forester's margin on Oman's off-road tracks. It is the difference between approaching a wadi crossing confidently and approaching it carefully. On the gravel tracks toward Jebel Shams, the boulder-scattered approaches to Wadi Bani Awf, or the loose-surface roads across the Hajar Mountains — the Forester's 220mm means the undercarriage is not the limiting factor.
This figure is matched by the Crosstrek in a smaller body. In the Forester, it comes with greater mass and a more commanding driving position — both of which add composure on demanding terrain.
X-MODE on the 2.5i-Sport — The Off-Road Layer
X-MODE coordinates engine output, ABS, and AWD torque split simultaneously to manage technical low-speed terrain — gravel descents, loose rock, uneven surfaces at walking pace.
Hill Descent Control, which operates within X-MODE, holds a constant descent speed without driver braking input. On a steep gravel slope toward a wadi — this function is the difference between a controlled descent and a demanding one.
Who the Forester is for in Oman
The Forester is for the Oman driver who wants a capable, well-equipped SUV that does not ask them to compromise. It suits families who want safety standard from the entry trim, drivers who use mountain and wadi roads on weekends, and buyers who value a car that is honest about what it is built for.
Three decisions — Symmetrical AWD always active, a Boxer engine that sits below the front axle, and EyeSight standard from the first trim — make the Forester the most technically coherent family SUV currently available through OTE Group in Oman. Everything else in the specification is an addition to that foundation.
Test drive the Forester at OTE Group Muscat
All three Forester trims — 2.5i EyeSight, 2.5i-L EyeSight, and 2.5i-Sport EyeSight — are available to drive at Subaru Oman's OTE Group showroom in Muscat. Request the 2.5i-Sport to experience X-MODE with Hill Descent Control on the demonstration route.
